Araucania knitting yarns are woven in Chile by the Mapuche people whose skill in weaving and hand dyeing has been passed down from generation to generation. Thanks to their expertise and knowledge in this craft, the women play an important cultural and economic role in the society of this indigenous people.
Araucania Puelo is made from 100% llama and is hand dyed with bold contrasting colours which knit the most vividly fashionable jumpers, cardigans, scarves and baby clothes. The full name of a llama is llama glama; they are camelids, very sociable and their fine undercoat is used for making wool. When comparing the strength of ordinary wool with llama wool, the former achieves a score of 122 whereas llama scores an impressive 358.
The colours of Araucania yarn are so deep and vivid that looking at a finished garment is akin to looking at a beautiful painting. The deep purple and pink of Araucania Maipo is striking and the softness from pure Araucania wool gives this yarn great warmth and drape. For knitters who like variegated pure wool yarn Araucania Mildon has trendy flecks in contrasting colours of purple and green, rust and gold, orange with grey and blue and blue grey, creating a veritable rainbow of colours. Araucania Lenga is an Araucania yarn which combines silk, cotton and microfibre.
