In this category you will find a vast selection of knitting and crochet yarns. A large proportion of the yarns we sell are natural fibres or blends with natural fibres. Once you have knitted using natural fibres you will notice a big difference between the properties of these and manmade fibres.
The designer branded knitting yarns we stock include Rowan, Patons, Jamieson & Smith, West Yorkshire Spinners, Frangipani and Noro. We carry stock in most shades but can order items in most instances so please feel free to contact us for anything you can't find.
The premium yarns we stock are Lorna's Laces, Malabrigo, Juniper Moon Farm, MillaMia, WoollyWumpkins, Knitting Goddess and Fyberspates. These are all produced from premium quality natural fibres except for a little nylon in the Lorna's Laces to make it strong enough to use for socks. The colour palettes are divine and the pattern support is really special. Many designers on Ravelry have used these yarns for their work (which can be viewed on the Ravelry website). A lot are available as downloads (some of them free!).
There is an extensive range of sock yarn with yarn from Opal, Zauerball and Schoppel Wolle - with so many choices you could have a pair of socks for every day!
Our budget range comes from the Designer Yarns Choices range. They have a wealth of experience in selecting fibres and have produced their own label yarns known as DY Choices. They produce aran, DK and 4 ply yarns and Baby Joy (a specific baby yarn), all in a good colour palette. The fibres used in these yarns have produced a 'premium' budget range which surpasses the quality of many of its peers. Although it will never replace a natural fibre, this range has proved extremely popular with knitters wishing to make children's garments, dog coats and home wear.
We also have yarns from our own Suffolk X flock. The fleeces have produced authentic Yorkshire Wolds yarns. There is 100% Suffolk X in an Aran weight and a beautiful blend of 50% Suffolk X and 50% British alpaca in both Aran and DK weights. Whether you like to know the source of your fibre or you want a souvenir from the Yorkshire Wolds, our own collection of yarns is certainly worth a look!
Natural fibres do need more care when washing and handling. Machine washable knitting wools tend to have been treated to give them the 'superwash' properties to withstand a machine wash. However, enzymes in detergent can attack wool and break it down over time. Therefore, if you do choose to machine wash your woollens, it might be best to use a specific enzyme free detergent. My favourite hand wash solution is 'Eucalan' - available from Little Houndales Knits. It is so easy to use that hand washing isn't a chore. Pour a small amount of the solution into a sink full of lukewarm water, place your garment in and following a gentle squeeze, go for a cuppa allowing the garment to soak for about 15 minutes. Remove the garment, gently squeeze out the excess water, roll in a towel to remove further excess water and dry flat. Simple!
We specialise in providing nothing but the very best knitting yarns. Whatever option you choose you will be able to guarantee a high standard of material to work with.
