4 ply and sock yarns are fine and lightweight. Sock yarns often tend to have a percentage of nylon to reinforce the yarn giving more wearability to the socks. Standard 4 ply sock yarn can also be used for making socks but without the nylon it is best to use a reinforcing thread on the heel and toe which you knit in with the yarn.
